New York Splendor

The City's Most Memorable Rooms

Foreword by Robert A.M. Stern
Look inside
Design authority Wendy Moonan takes the reader on a tour of some of New York City's finest residential rooms--past and present.

The selection of interiors is about the "wow" factor--New York residential spaces that elicit gasps of pleasure and surprise when first seen. Some are very grand, others sparingly modern or eclectic. All are exceptional and, Moonan promises, unforgettable. Groundbreaking rooms include Brooke Astor's elegant library by Albert Hadley; Gloria Vanderbilt's sublime patchwork bedroom; Donald Judd's dramatically spare art-filled loft; Adolfo's opulent and magnificently red entrance hall; a Peter Marino-designed penthouse with sweeping midtown views; and Jamie Drake's stunning dining room for the mayor's residence, Gracie Mansion. Other illustrious interior designers and architects represented in the book include Mario Buatta, Robert Couturier, Albert Hadley, Denning & Fourcade, Mark Hampton, Philip Johnson, Charlotte Moss, Thomas O'Brien, Paul Rudolph, Bunny Williams, and Steven Gambrel.
New York is the epicenter of interior-design innovations. Residents embrace myriad styles--from pure period historicism to bracing modernity. Moonan investigates the city's best residential spaces and presents them here, a book for the libraries of design lovers and professionals in the field.
"Stunning photographs and explanatory text offer a rare peak at the handiwork of prominent designers and architects who created Brooke Astor’s library, for instance, and revived Gracie Mansion." -The New York Times

"
If you are looking from some interior inspiration, this lush book is packed with photographs of private rooms that range from minimalist to extravagant. Some are rooms from the past, like Gloria Vanderbilt’s 1970 patchwork bedroom and Brooke Astor’s library by Parish-Hadley." —Brownstoner

"Complete with engaging written reportage, this personal survey of outstanding rooms in New York's most luxurious apartments, by architecture and design journalist Wendy Moonan, provides a richly illustrated overview of interior design, decoration and architecture during the past half-century." —Architectural Record

"In New York Splendor: The City's Most Memorable Rooms, Wendy Moonan brings readers into the city's finest interior spaces. The book shares images of every type of grand home in New York from opulent French-inspired townhouses to sleek glass and concrete-constructed apartments, outlining their defining design details and what makes them fabulous. Among the covetable residential rooms of the artists, architects, and penthouse dwellers featured in the tome are the beautifully curated homes of several fashion designers. With these spaces, Moonan offers a glimpse into how fashion creators have made a stylish space for themselves." —CR Fashion Book.com

"These New York residential spaces elicit gasps of pleasure and surprise when first encountered. Some are very grand, others sparingly modern... or eclectic. All are exceptional." —Society Diaries
Longtime New Yorker Wendy Moonan has been writing about architecture, design, and antiques for thirty years for the New York Times, Town & Country, House & Garden, Architectural Digest, Galerie Magazine, and 1stdibs.com. She studied at Wellesley and the Sorbonne, and was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard. Nonetheless, she says she learned more by sitting in the living rooms of connoisseurs, artists, and patrons than anywhere else.
