To promote their new book, Be A Plant-Based Woman Warrior, Jane and Ann Crile Esselstyn share tips on the best way to choose a watermelon is by its weight.
First, the heaviest is best.
The next things to look for are:
- A yellowish area on the exterior, which shows it was grown on the ground and in the sun.
- Sugar lines, which are light, scratchy lines on the exterior that look like light brown stitches, where the sweetness is getting out.
- A dimple or a puckered scarred area that has healed over. This means the watermelon is a sweet one and bees were trying to get in at some point. This one is a find!
And the best way to eat watermelon is with a kiss of lime! You will delight in the bright flavor. If you are feeling game, add a wee pinch of chili powder, which adds a whole new twist, making it more of an appetizer than a dessert!
Enjoy and stay cool this summer!
