2019 marks the 50th anniversary of Eric Carle’s preschool classic, THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR. In honor of this milestone, zoos, botanical gardens, libraries, museums and eateries across the country will host interactive Very Hungry Caterpillar experiences throughout 2019. In April, a Very Hungry Caterpillar car and costume character will traverse the country. Kicking off at the Los Angeles Times Book Festival, the car will make its way across the United States, traveling through 20 states and over 4500 miles. Visit www.vhc50.com to see a full list of events and activities.
With its vivid colors and innovative hole-punched pages, THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR teaches lessons in counting, the days of the week, the process of metamorphosis, and the importance of choosing foods wisely. The book has wiggled its way into the hearts of generations of readers and become a bookshelf staple in homes and classrooms nationwide. Today, every 30 seconds, somewhere in the world, a copy of THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR is sold.
To commemorate the anniversary, Penguin Young Readers has released a golden edition that features bonus content including an appreciation by prominent children’s literacy advocate Dolly Parton, as well as an essay on the history and significance of the Caterpillar, and historic photos and rare images of the book’s original sketches.
